With the launch of our new website, it felt like an appropriate moment to celebrate what we do, with a specific lens on tech and the human touch, aiming to make the most of both.

I’m a believer in the power of technology, having been working and investing in digital tech since 1999,  helping to build what evolved from Cheapflights to become Momondo Group – sold to Booking in 2017 - and investing in other digital start-ups since 2006. I continue to invest through Marchmont Ventures and am excited to be Chairman of Motorway.co.uk.  I have learned a lot and I feel very lucky for the journey, riding a wave of change.  I love technology, with its extraordinary magical ability to rapidly re-shape and improve our world - it’s an enormous opportunity that has only just begun, that we should embrace and nurture but it also has the potential for imbalance and taking away what makes humanity precious, in a repeat of what happened in the industrial revolution.  I’m a geeky fan of the arts & crafts movement which sought to redress some of the shortcomings or fears that came in this period of change and am keen on re-visiting it’s energy and purpose today. As I’ve written before on LinkedIn  – I specifically see an opportunity at Marchmont House to nurture a venue and retreat for creative inspiration that supports this balance, bridging the best of arts and crafts values, the best of nature, the best of human endeavour, with a forward looking view about shaping the kind of digital and tangible world that we want to live in together. We are bulding a home to makers and creators to support &  inspire those in business, the arts, crafts & social enterprise.  We hope to build a place where everyone can channel their inner artist and help shape our world, in the spirit of Joseph Beuys who believed everyone could be an artist.

I’m so excited about how far Marchmont has come over the last few years – we now have a wonderful venue and canvas to celebrate creativity in so many ways.  A retreat, where I love meeting exec teams – often from digital, creative or craft based businesses, our tours, our weekend art huddles, our musical explorations, our nascent artist community including our chairmakers, our sculptors, our new pottery and soon to be launched new Silversmithing centre of excellence,  our array of artist residencies, our Foundation funded school visits and community partnerships , our garnering of support from the Corporate world – plus so much more.  I feel so lucky to be part of it.  And it feels real now, with real momentum, which I am very thankful for.   At our core, our dream is to celebrate and inspire creativity. I think we have a unique and exciting opportunity to do so.

Why is creativity important you may ask? And why are you well placed to nurture creative inspiration?   It seems obvious to me, but perhaps not super easy to express. But – how about this, in the spirit of embracing the best of technology, I was playing with Open AI’s chatbot – Chat GPT – which unveils the awesome, inspiring, and slightly scary early powers of artificial intelligence.  So, I thought I’d test it and learn a little by asking it to answer these questions. The results were gripping and exciting in so many ways.  Even a computer, a robot, which has no creative consciousness or dream of what our world could or should be, can crystalise and articulate -rather well – the importance of creativity. It also highlights why Marchmont is an ideal place to inspire creativity by getting close to nature, hear stories about artists and entrepreneurs, be amongst a creative community, perhaps learn a new skill and a be in a calm place to free your mind from the day to day… and dream a little.  Do have a read and whatever creative inspiration you are seeking – in business, the arts, crafts or social enterprise, we wish you luck on whatever course you chose but hope you enjoy the new website, the new blog and to see you at Marchmont soon.  At the end, I round-up with a poem written by ChatGPT OpenAI….

Hugo >> Explore creative inspiration as a theme.

Creative inspiration can be a powerful force that drives the creative process and helps to generate new and original ideas. It can come from many different sources and take many different forms.

One source of creative inspiration is the natural world. Many artists, writers, and musicians have found inspiration in the beauty and complexity of the natural world, and have used it as a source of inspiration for their work. For example, the changing seasons, the patterns of nature, and the beauty of landscapes and wildlife can all be sources of creative inspiration.

Another source of creative inspiration is personal experiences and emotions. Many artists and writers have used their own experiences and emotions as a starting point for their work, drawing on their own feelings and observations to create something new and original.

Creative inspiration can also come from other art forms and cultural influences. Many artists and writers have been inspired by the work of others, and have used it as a source of inspiration for their own work. For example, an artist might be inspired by the work of a painter from a different time period, or a writer might be inspired by the work of a poet from a different culture.

Overall, creative inspiration is a complex and multifaceted concept that can come from many different sources and take many different forms. It is an important part of the creative process and can help to drive the development of new and original ideas.

Hugo >> What is best way to develop a purpose of nurturing creative inspiration?

Here are a few ways that you might go about developing a purpose of nurturing creative inspiration:

  1. Set aside dedicated time for creative pursuits: Make time for activities that allow you to engage your creativity, such as writing, drawing, painting, or playing a musical instrument.
  2. Find a supportive community: Surround yourself with people who are supportive of your creative pursuits and who can provide encouragement and feedback. This might include joining a club or group that shares your interests, or seeking out a mentor or coach.
  3. Take breaks and engage in other activities: Sometimes, the best way to nurture creative inspiration is to take a break from your creative work and engage in other activities. This could include things like going for a walk, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in a hobby that is unrelated to your creative pursuits.
  4. Seek out new experiences and exposures: Expose yourself to new experiences and ideas, which can help to spark new creative inspiration. This might include reading, traveling, or trying out new hobbies and activities.
  5. Practice regularly: The more you practice and engage in creative activities, the more you will be able to nurture and develop your creative inspiration. Set aside regular time to work on your creative pursuits, and try to make it a consistent part of your routine.

Remember, everyone's creative process is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. It may take some trial and error to find what works best for you in terms of nurturing your creative inspiration.

Whilst on the topic, I leave you with this last question, something we should all take some time to explore…

Hugo >> Write a poem about why Marchmont House is a retreat for creative inspiration, a home to makers and creators

Poem written by Artificial intelligence – perhaps the 4th iteration after feedback & input from myself including some keywords and asking to make it shorter

Marchmont House, a place of comfort and ease,

A place where the makers and creators find peace

Amidst the chaos of life's hectic pace,

We find respite and rest in this quiet place

From chair makers to artist residencies,

Exec retreats to sculptors and more,

We find the inspiration and creativity

To explore the expanse of the creative shore

Inspired by the beauty and magic of art,

We nurture our own passions and hearts,

Embracing the wonder and joy of creation,

We find the strength and courage to live our own vocation

In the vast open skies above Marchmont House,

We find tranquility and peace, a quiet repose

A place to let our imaginations roam,

To nestle in the safety of this peaceful home

Marchmont House is a place of wonder and delight,

A place where the magic of creativity takes flight,

Where the makers and creators find their own way,

To embrace the beauty of life in a brighter new day.
