About the event

For Hugo's Creative Inspiration Tour guests will spend the day with owner Hugo Burge. Starting with a private tour of the House followed by a rare opportunity to walk the grounds with Hugo and hear first-hand about his vision for Marchmont as a 'Home to Makers & Creators', to get insight into the challenges of the seven-year House restoration, to learn about his plans for the development of the House and the Walled Garden, and perhaps the 'last chance' to see inside Sir Robert Lorimer's hothouses from 1917 - a private space that is coming to the end of a renovation.

Hugo Burge at Marchmont House

Following the 'sold out 'Hugo's Garden Ramble Tour' last year (returning for Open Studios 2023), we received many requests to hear more from Hugo about Marchmont. This exclusive day of insights is limited to just 20 people and takes place as part of our sponsorship of Borders Art Fair

Hugo will start the day by welcoming guests on a private tour of Marchmont House, where they will learn about the stunning restoration and how some of the key decisions were made in terms of the art collection, including the incredible local trades and craftspeople who helped bring the House back to life.

Charlie Poulsen and Hugo Burge with Skyboat

After a seasonal buffet lunch in our Old Kitchen Gallery, Hugo will lead a two hour walking tour of the gardens and grounds of Marchmont. Outdoor shoes are advised but the afternoon will be a gentle 'ramble' that will take in some highlights from our sculpture collection including work by giants Antony Gormley, David Nash and Stephen Cox as well as showcasing a new generation of 'local hero' sculptors working in Scotland today including Keith McCarter, Frippy Jameson and Charlie Poulsen. Hugo will also update guests on the plans for the Marchmont Studios and workshops situated in the old stables courtyard.

The afternoon 'ramble' will conclude back on the terrace of the Old Kitchen Gallery where tea, coffee and homemade Marchmont cakes will be served.
