Throughout the centuries, women have been involved in making art, whether as creators and innovators of new forms of artistic expression, patrons, collectors, sources of inspiration, or significant contributors as art historians and critics.
Taking in some hidden gems in the collection alongside some well known works, this special tour will celebrate the inspiring women mural painters and artists of the late 19th Century, focusing on Phoebe Anna Traquair, Mary Seton Watts and the women artists of the Pre-Raphaelite ‘Sisterhood’ along with older works featuring women as subjects or inspiration.
Starting at 11:00am this 90 minute tour will conclude with a seasonal buffet lunch in our Old Kitchen Gallery, home to our collection of Scottish Colourist paintings.
We love shining a light on untold stories, particularly exploring the inspiring pre-Raphaelite mural painters of the 19th century. These are often under-explored stories of the arts and crafts movement and have formed an important part of our collection at Marchmont House.
More details of the works included in this special tour will be added in the next few weeks.
All tours start at the time advertised, however doors will open twenty minutes prior to the start time when freshly made tea, coffee and wonderful homemade shortbread will be served to suit.
