About the Tour

Throughout the centuries, women have been involved in making art, whether as creators and innovators of new forms of artistic expression, patrons, collectors, sources of inspiration, or significant contributors as art historians and critics.

Lou Gardiner, Embroidery Artist, wearing her Cape of Clouds, picture by Colin Hattersley

We will explore the representation of women in the 500 year period spanned by our collection – as artists, as well as the women who inspired our artworks.  We will look at the social and cultural environment, and obstacles, faced by women who wished to become artists, and what it took to succeed as a female artist in times when opportunities for women were so few.

This is an opportunity to take a fresh look at the Marchmont collection, in the context of the history of the house, and to examine inspirational works by women and of women.   Focusing on some hidden gems in the collection, alongside some well known works, this special tour will celebrate skills traditionally involving women, in addition to the flowering of female talent following the opening of Art Schools to women.

Event Timings

Starting at 11:00am this 90 minute tour will conclude with a seasonal buffet lunch in our Old Kitchen Gallery, home to our collection of Scottish Colourist paintings.

19th Century Artists

We love shining a light on untold stories, particularly exploring the inspiring pre-Raphaelite mural painters of the 19th century. These are often under-explored stories of the arts and crafts movement and have formed an important part of our collection at Marchmont House.

Taking in some hidden gems in the collection alongside some well known works, this special tour will celebrate the inspiring women mural painters and artists of the late 19th Century, including Phoebe Anna Traquair, Mary Seton Watts and the women artists of the Pre-Raphaelite ‘Sisterhood’ alongside contemporary makers including Lou Gardiner, embroidery artist who is currently working on a commissioned Cape of Creative Courage for Marchmont House.
